NEWS & UPDATES from 2003
back to the main news page
Sept 16, 2003

Hi everybody!

Great News! I'll be with Steve Vai for another G3 tour this fall! It will be Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, & Yngwie Malmsteen! Some of you old timers may remember the Talas/ Yngwie tour from 1985. That was the tour I did prior to joining David Lee Roth to start his Eat 'Em & Smile record & tour. I guess it all fits together somehow! I'll be playing with Steve along with Tony MacAlpine. It should be a great time! Get tickets early -- every show sold out last time. See you there!

Update for summer of 2003
Right now I'm working on several new records:
My latest solo CD -- this one will be more bass oriented, though I'll be singing on a couple of tracks. I'll let you know any details as they become available.
A new Niacin CD. Writing & recording that right now as well. "Time Crunch" did very well for us and was our most critically acclaimed. We'll try to top it! -- www.niacinb3.com
New Steve Vai. Working on it -- no details available yet.
A USA release of Mr Big Greatest Hits from Rhino! It includes dome rare stuff and all the best of the rest. Estimating a December or later release date.
Also, some records are finished & out now (or coming soon) that you might not have heard about:
Niacin "Blood Sweat & Beers" -- a live CD from one of our first tours, never available outside of Japan before. Now on Magna Carta with a bonus track. Click here for ordering info.
9 Short Films -- Terry Bozzio & myself on a very experimental CD we did together. Terry did an amazing job drumming (of course!) and did some spoken word vocals as well. I played bass & guitar on these tracks we wrote together.
Glenn Hughes -- I played on a track with the amazing singer (and bass player!) Glenn Hughes. The album is called "Songs in the Key of Rock".
Derek Sherinian -- I played on a track on Derek's latest release "Black Utopia". -- www.dereksherinian.com
Planet X -- I played on a track their release "Moonbabies". -- www.xplanetx.com
Influences & Connections. The first in a series of records documenting a band's influences & connections in their career, recording, and songwriting. Volume one is about Mr. Big. However, it is NOT a Mr. Big record. It is NOT a Mr. Big record. Did I mention that it is NOT a Mr. Big record? Well, just in case -- it is NOT a Mr. Big record. We had some awesome singers & players come in and do their versions of some Mr. Big tracks. Everyone included has been a big influence to us or connected to the band in some way.

stilll more:

Instructional videos! Finally, we are re-releasing the original 2 video's on DVD PLUS another new one (or two). As soon as they are available, I'll send out a notice with ordering info.
The Archive Project. An ongoing attempt to burn to disk or transfer to hard drive, all the bootlegs, demo's, rehearsals, live shows, album out takes, unused tracks and much much more. I'll eventually have a HUGE database of music I've been involved in. Some of it has never been heard before. Early Talas, UFO, Michael Schenker, David Lee Roth, Niacin, Mr. Big, and many more. It also includes many hours of unseen video. It's a HUGE project, but I hope someday to make it all available -- somehow! This could take a LONG time.
Gear News
Yamaha BEX-BS bass is shipping now! I designed a brand new bass with Yamaha. It's a semi hollow body beauty with a totally unique tone. www.yamaha.com
My RotoSound string set "BS66" is out and selling like crazy. Great to be back with RotoSound. I toured the factory in England to get a first hand look at production and quality control. Incredible! They really do make them by hand! www.rotosound.com
The Ampeg SVP-BSP Pre-amp I helped design is selling well too. Along with the SVT 5 Pro, which includes the pre-amp circuitry along with a full on amp. www.ampeg.com
New gear I'm using:
The latest is "Groove Agent" by Steinberg. An awesome drum machine/programmer. -- www.us.streinberg.net

Native Instruments Kontakt -- Software sampler. Awesome! Direct disk streaming, almost unlimited formats. An incredible program. Also, Battery and FM7! I've used the B4, Spectral Delay, and Pro 52 for years now. I love the Native Instrument stuff. Couldn't live without it! -- www.native-instruments.com

Stylus & Atmosphere by Spectrasonics. -- www.spectrasonics.net

My new Mac dual processor G4 is interfaced with M-Audio's Delta 1010. The converters sound wonderful. Easily comparable to (or exceeding!) anything out there. -- www.m-audio.com

Stone Picks: Finally! A source for stone guitar picks! I play my baritone guitars with a stone pick. The REAL ROCK company in Merlin. Oregon makes some spectacular stone picks. I absolutely love them. -- www.wizzards.net/realrock

New On My Site
Tons of new photos, including photos from the B'z 2002 tour. The B'z are a huge Japanese band that asked me to do a stadium tour with them. We played to over 750,000 people that summer.
New audio, including Bono from U2, live onstage at Buffalo's Rich Stadium, in front of 60,000 people, explaining how they opened for Talas on their first tour!
A new message-board. I'll try to pop in when my schedule permits to answer questions.
